Connor made sure Sophie got to host her big family dinner. And he was absolutely on hand to be her sous chef, fetching, chopping, stirring as instructed. If it gave him the opportunity to be close to her, stealing a touch here and there, well, tonight he was a happy opportunist. He’d take what he could get. Their family and friends had arrived, the bulk of them flowing in and out of the kitchen, setting the table and otherwise prepping the dining room for the fragrant feast he’d been drooling over for more than an hour. Sophie herself looked like an exotic ballerina, dancing from dish to dish. His bracelet adorned her slender wrist, and joy added a lightness to her steps. He couldn’t help but smile, knowing he’d given her that.

Her clear grey eyes met his as she loaded fresh naan into a basket. “You’re looking very self-satisfied.”

“I’m about to be eating a pure dead brilliant meal made by one of my favorite people, and it’s going to start with dessert. What do I have to complain about?”

Her brows knit. “Dessert? What are you—”

Because the kitchen was clear for the moment, he darted in and stole a kiss. Just a peck, rather than the lingering taste he wanted, but it left her with a dazed expression that was almost as satisfying.

Someone cleared their throat, and Connor realized the room hadn’t been as empty as he’d thought. Sophie blushed and began ladling butter chicken into one of the hammered copper serving bowls.

Well, they’d address that as they needed to.

“Come on and grab a dish!”

At Sophie’s call, everyone flooded in and began transferring the food to the dining room. When they settled at the table, instead of taking her usual seat down by Kyla, Sophie sat beside him. A unit. No muss, no fuss. Stupidly pleased by that, Connor grinned at her and hooked his pinky finger with hers beneath the table.

Ciara cleared her throat. “So I’m just gonna bring up the elephant in the room. Are you two…?” She waved a hand between them, encompassing a whole range of possibilities for what she was suggesting, all of which meant some variation of him and Sophie being actually together.

Which they were. In some form or fashion. Despite the shift in their relationship, they hadn’t defined it or discussed what to tell anyone else. He didn’t want to hide their relationship, and certainly his behavior toward her hadn’t been that of an indifferent fake fiancé. But he was committed to letting Sophie set the pace, so he stayed quiet and let her field the question.

Unperturbed, Sophie unfolded her cloth napkin with a snap and laid it in her lap. “Yes.”

There was a beat of silence and surprise as everyone waited for her to elaborate. Instead, she reached for the bowl of dahl, leaving them all to draw their own conclusions.

From the opposite end of the table, Charlotte pumped her fist. “Called it.”

“Damn it,” Ciara muttered. “I had two more weeks in the pool.
